Most people talk about macroeconomics like it’s the weather: something huge and uncontrollable. The reason unemployment got better or worse. The reason we’re doing layoffs or hiring freezes. The reason interest rates are changing.

This is a decent metaphor with the caveat that you have to imagine a world in which a handful of humans are giants and are actually capable of single-handedly causing bad weather, by clapping their hands too enthusiastically or farting too much, etc. Except also add to this metaphor that it’s the rest of us who collectively have made them into giants because like, I don’t know, we think giants are cool and it’s totally worth feeding a giant 1000x the caloric requirements of a regular size person so they can cause bad weather sometimes, because we think they’re also the only way to cause good weather, because we refuse to look at any science about weather. It ends up being a bit of a weird metaphor.
